5 hour drive from Johannesburg International Airport. See key map (F21). Situated in the north-eastern region of KwaZulu Natal Province. Once, the hunting grounds of Zulu kings, now a haven for wildlife. Established in1897 the oldest wildlife sanctuary in Africa, and third largest in South Africa, make up a vast 96,000 hectare complex that offers a broad range of habitats, from rocky hillside to open savannah grass and thick woodland, supporting a rich variety of African game, with some 86 species of mammal. This is “Big Five” country (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros) with a high concentration of white rhinoceros and a smaller numbers of black rhinoceros. It also accommodates giraffe, zebra, baboon, nyala, impala, kudu, waterbuck, warthog, wildebeest, cheetah, cape hunting dog and spotted hyena. More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the game reserve. Over and above its abundance of wildlife Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is renowned for its success in saving the white rhinoceros from extinction and pride itself in having the only naturally occurring white rhinoceros population, which currently stands at 900. St. Lucia Game Estuary Reserve situated on the north-eastern coastline (Maputoland) of KwaZulu Natal Province and 53 kilometres from Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, at the heart of one of southern Africa’s most important wetland systems, this park is one of the busiest tourist areas on the Maputoland coast, based on an ancient, 40 km-long lake, whose shores touch coastal dunes, marshlands, coastal forest, mangrove swamps, lily pans and, inland, bushveld and grassland. The lake and estuary, which connects up to the open sea, contains thriving colonies of about 2000 crocodiles, 800 hippos, and black fin and Zambezi River sharks. But the birds are the stars, with over 450 species, including large colonies of pelicans and flamingos, goliath and other herons, fish eagles and three species of kingfisher. Situated in a malaria area, visitors are advised to take precautions during the summer and rainy months (September – March) in South Africa when visiting Hluhluwe-Umfolozi and St.Lucia areas.
